Patients had to sleep on towels after a health board ran out of sheets, nurses have claimed.

Staff at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital say they regularly run out of linen.

They also claim there are not enough pillows and patients have to make do with rolled-up blankets.

A nurse told the Record “On Sunday night, we called up for linen and were told there was none within Greater Glasgow and Clyde and that we would just have to make do until 6am on Monday.

“We had no sheets and with double incontinent patients, we just had to keep our fingers crossed we wouldn’t run out of towels.

“It is an absolute nightmare. We have a big, fancy hospital but no sheets for the beds.

“We had to make do with towels or gowns. In one ward alone, we had to use towels on six beds.

“The linen situation is a complete disaster and has been for a few years now.”

Another member of staff at the hospital said: “They run out of linen on a regular basis, at least once a week. They also don’t have enough pillows.

“We have to transfer patients with rolled-up blankets under their heads as wards can’t afford to lose their pillows.”

Our story from 14 months ago

In October 2015, we told how elderly patients were forced to lie in their own excrement because the £840million hospital regularly ran out of linen at night.

The health board said it was down to organisational problems, rather than shortages.

A spokesman for the health board denied there had been sheet shortages at the QEUH ot any of their hospitals over the weekend.

He said checks had been made with linen suppliers and clinical managers and insisted: “We have had no issues with linen at all.”

Labour’s health spokesman Anas Sarwar said the claims pointed to “mismanagement of our NHS.”

He added: continued: “This is an unacceptable situation. The health board need to get a grip of this problem immediately and a full investigation must take place to stop this happening again.”
